WORSHIP FOR THE LORD’S DAY

JANUARY 29, 2017

FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

~Gathering Around the Word~

~Luke 3:1-6~

Introit:  “O God, You Are My God” (P#743)

Welcome and Announcements

* Hymn #409: “Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice” (P #163)

* Call to Worship:

  Leader:  Arise, shine; for your light has come,

  People:  and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

  Leader:  Nations shall come to your light

  People:  and rulers to the brightness of your rising.

* Prayer of the day:

Lord of the Sabbath, your followers were told not to work on the Sabbath, and yet they boldly plucked grain to show that you are Lord of all. The world tells us not to rest on the Sabbath. Show us how to rest boldly, rejecting conventions that go against your will, and instead praying and resting as you did up on the mountain, for the glory of your word and work, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession:Merciful God, in baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us part of the body of Christ.  We confess that we remain preoccupied with ourselves, separated from sisters and brothers in Christ.  We cling to destructive habits, hold grudges, and show reluctance to welcome one another; we allow the past to hold us hostage. In your loving kindness, have mercy on us, and free us from sin.  Remind us of the promises you make in baptism so that we may rise to new life, and live together in grace.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, believe the good news of the gospel!

In Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

* Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Ghost

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

World without end, amen, amen.

Anthem:   “We Cannot Measure How You Heal”

Children’s Sermon

~We Hear the Word Read and Proclaimed~

~Luke 8:4-8~

* Hymn #345:  “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”

Scripture Lesson:  Luke 6:1-16

 Leader:  These are the words of God for the people of God

 People:  Thanks be to God

Prayer of Illumination:Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord” (P#452)

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord.  Open the eyes of my heart;

I want to see you; I want to see you; (repeat)

To see you high and lifted up, shining in the light of your glory.

Pour out your power and love as we sing “Holy, holy, holy.”

Holy, holy, holy.  Holy, holy, holy.

Holy holy, holy, I want to see you.

Change my heart, O God, may I be like you.
